You Don’t Have to Be an Expert to Study the Bible
Why you don't need a seminary degree to read your Bible
If you’ve ever thought, “I’m not qualified to study the Bible on my own,” you’re not alone. Many women never begin because they assume Bible study is reserved for pastors, scholars, or people who know far more than they do.
But that simply isn’t true.
The Bible was written to be read by ordinary people.
People like you.
People like me.
People who are still learning, still growing, and still asking questions.
You do not need a seminary degree to open your Bible. You need a willing heart.
Somewhere Along the Way, We Started Believing the Wrong Thing
Many Christians treat Bible study as if it’s an advanced subject that only experts can understand. We imagine that unless we know Greek, own fifteen commentaries, or can explain every difficult passage, we’re not ready to study God’s Word for ourselves.
But think about who first received the Scriptures.
Farmers. Fishermen. Mothers. Laborers. Merchants.
Ordinary men and women.
God did not give His Word only to the educated few. He gave it to His people.
The Bible was never intended to sit behind a glass case waiting for experts to interpret it. It was meant to be opened, read, treasured, and obeyed.
The Enemy Loves This Lie
If Satan can convince you that you’re unqualified, he doesn’t have to stop you from studying the Bible.
You’ll stop yourself.
You’ll keep waiting until you know more.
You’ll keep telling yourself you’ll start after you take a class, finish a study, buy the right resources, or feel more prepared.
Months pass. Sometimes years pass.
Meanwhile, the Bible remains closed, not because God kept you out, but because fear convinced you to stay away.
God Never Asked You to Know Everything
Here’s something freeing.
God never asks you to understand everything before you begin.
When a child learns to read, we don’t expect mastery on day one. We expect growth.
Bible study works the same way.
You will not understand every passage. You will encounter verses that confuse you. You will have questions. That’s normal. The goal is not instant expertise. The goal is faithful learning.
Every mature believer you admire started exactly where you are now, knowing less than they know today.
The Holy Spirit Is a Better Teacher Than You Think
One reason Christians can confidently open their Bibles is because God has not left them alone.
The Holy Spirit helps believers understand and apply God’s Word.
That doesn’t mean every passage becomes instantly clear. It does mean that God actively helps His children learn.
You are not sitting down with the Bible by yourself. The Author is present and that changes everything.
Start With What You Understand
Many women become discouraged because they focus on what they don’t understand.
Try flipping that around.
Ask yourself:
What do I understand from this passage?
What does this teach me about God?
Is there a truth I can trust today?
Is there something I should obey?
You may not understand every detail, but you can almost always understand something.
And that something becomes the starting point for growth.
You Are Exactly the Kind of Person God Invites
The invitation to know God through His Word was never limited to experts.
It’s for busy moms.
It’s for women who feel behind.
It’s for brand-new believers.
It’s for women who have more questions than answers.
It’s for ordinary Christians who simply want to know God better.
In other words, it’s for you.
So stop waiting until you feel qualified.
Open your Bible today.
Because the greatest barrier to Bible study is often not a lack of knowledge.
It’s believing the lie that you need more knowledge before you’re allowed to begin.
